How You Can Prevent Plumbing Leaks at Home

Plumbing leaks are relatively common and can be a stressful experience for homeowners. While some issues may develop even if you’ve been maintaining your pipes properly, you can help prevent plumbing leaks at home by taking these simple steps.

1. Reduce Water Pressure

High water pressure puts extra strain on your pipes. Over time, this can cause them to weaken and ultimately to rupture. Contact a plumber if you need assistance in reducing your home’s water pressure to a reasonable level. Upgrade your faucets and showerheads to low-flow models with aerated attachments to create the water pressure you desire. This will also reduce your water usage and monthly bill.

2. Invest in a Water Softener

Hard water is common in many areas and while it’s safe to drink, it can be harmful to your pipes. Hard water contains a high concentration of minerals that leaves residue on the inside of the pipes. As this residue builds up, pressure in the pipes increases. At the same time, some types of sediment cause corrosion that weakens the pipes. An easy way to prevent leaks caused by hard water is to invest in a water softening system for your home.

3. Inspect Joints Periodically

Another way to prevent plumbing leaks at home is to inspect pipe joints periodically. The area where two pipes meet is vulnerable to leaks. When necessary, you can use specialized plumbing tape to seal or wrap these joints. While inspecting joints underneath your sinks and in other visible areas, also check and make sure your fixtures are in good shape.

4. Lubricate Compression Joints to Prevent Plumbing Leaks

While some plumbing joints can be taped, this is not practical for compression joints. Compression joints are also subject to leaks, and many of these leaks can be prevented when you apply a special lubricant. Putting lubricant on the threads of the compression fitting helps tighten the connection and closes small gaps where water could escape.

Leaks can develop anywhere within your plumbing system, but by including these tips in your regular home maintenance plan, many of these leaks can be prevented.
